2 - Salaš Zbojská
This restaurant-and-more is a beautiful place-to- be, with a marvelous view from the big terrace. It is built according to the ancient Slovak tradition of using whole tree trunks.
What to do at Salaš Zbojská?
1. Relax for a few hours in this beautiful spot, while enjoying a nice meal, cup of coffee or a cool beer at the restaurant.
2. Stunning hike through the Devil’s gorge, where once the local robber Jakub Surovec and his companions were in charge.
3. A full day's hike in the Muranská Planina (borrow the map of Fabola hola)
4. A Small hike (15 min) to a lookout tower close by with spectacular views.
5. At certain times a local minibus runs to a small traditional farm, situated in the (protected) nature
across the main road. Spend a few hours there or go for a walk (starting and returning at the farm),
after which you can take the mini bus back to the restaurant. Or you could walk all the way back
to the restaurant, mainly downhill.
For further information, and to be sure the gorge is open, please visit the information centre in Zbojska.
The start of the hike through the Devil s gorge is on the other side of
the main road. You will see the large wooden statue of Jakub Surovec
in the meadow and behind it at the forest edge you will see two
information signs. From there, follow the ‘diagonal green’ signs,
the hike takes about 2.5 to 3 hours, mainly in the shade. Where the gorge becomes increasingly narrow, just continue by using the rocks as stepping stones the water! The hike really leads THROUGH the water! A great hike when the weather is hot: it will cool you down beautifully!
On the menu at the Zbojska-restaurant are original Slovak dishes, while service is in traditional costume with folk music playing. The restaurant has its own sheepfarm for the production of meat and cheeses. You are invited to visit the cheese production kitchen behind the restaurant up on the hill.

Taking the car to Zbojská? Follow route 72 towards Tisovec (down the road go left) and you will find it after about 12 km. in the meadow on the left hand side of the road.

3 - Lookout tower Brezno
With a height of 40 meters, this lookout tower is one of the highest in Slovakia. It offers visitors a breathtaking view of the surrounding national parks and the Horehronie region. However, it being a 40 meter tower on top of a hill, it is not advisible for people who are afraid of heights. If you are afraid of heights, you can always just wait below the tower. The hike there through the forest is still very much worth the trip!
The easiest parking location is at the local Kaufland parking area. You then proceed to follow the way on the right side of the Kaufland. Behind the Kaufland (on the way to the observation tower) you can find a small animal park which has several type of deer. Feel free to bring some food and try to feed them. They love carrots and apples, but please do not feed them bread as this can be harmful. There are also several information and educational boards for children, teaching them about nature and the different animals and plants.
Once you pass the animal park you will take a right turn and proceed towards the Lookout Tower. There are two routes which lead to its top, one of which also includes an educational trail that introduces the attractions of the local nature in an engaging way. A great way for children to learn something about the nature surrounding them
If you like lookout towers, be sure to check out the towers at Zbojská and Čierny Balog. Even though they are smaller, they still offer spectacular views of their surroundings!
4 - Čierny Balog
Open air museum - Skanzen
About 15 km from the campsite , you will find the village of cierny balog, which has an openair museum and educational route (a nice walk) through the woods. The openair museum can be reached by car, but it is also possible to take the historical train for part of the way (more information below).
There are currently more than 80 stops on the more than three-kilometer-long "Forest Time Trail", which will offer you many interesting exhibits and natural forest habitats that will offer you revealing views of the life-giving capabilities of the forest. You can also see images from the history, present and future of forestry.
Historical train
To board the historical train you can park your car at cierny balog station (address hlavna 56) where you will also find a little train museum and several old trains to explore. The train runs appr every hour from 1/7 to 1/9, in the off season (between 15/4 and 15/9) it will run as soon as there are 6 passengers (you may have to wait a little). There is a nice restaurant close to the train station.
You can buy a ticket for 3 different tracks. At certain times the train is a real 100 years old steam train!
